After careful deliberation, choosing from a very distinguished group of nominee's, LMN's panel of judges chose Tim Cook, president and CTO of Free Practice Management, Inc. as the recipient of the 2001 Linux Medical News Open Source Achievement Award. Tim Cook started the FreePM project in the fall of 1998. In 1999 he then established a web presence and began building wider community support. Over one hundred supporters joined in the development of FreePM. Recognized by Minoru Development Corporation as a key player in open source healthcare software, he was invited to the Toronto Open Source Healthcare Summit.

In January 2000, Tim left his position as a system administrator for a healthcare corporation after failing to convince IT management of the benefits of open source medical software. Tim was employed by Minoru Development Corporation to assist with the Circare project. While employed at Minoru Tim was heavily involved in writing proposals for government funding of open source projects. The Spirit project was subsequently funded as an European Union project.

In September 2000, he left Minoru to secure funding for fulltime work on FreePM. Free Practice Management, Inc. was born as a support and services company.

In November 2000, Free Practice Management, Inc. was the first company to present an open source healthcare product on the show floor of a major event. The AMIA 2000 booth attracted a lot of attention and opened the concept of open source to a wider audience of healthcare informatics professionals. Tim presented FreePM concepts at the three Fresno Open Source Healthcare Summits hosted by Dr. David Pepper in 2000 - 2001. The Fresno Summits provided an opportunity to collaborate with physicians and information technology experts from the US and the UK.

FYI, Tim Cook is on the right dressed in jacket, I am on the left dressed in black. -- Ignacio Valdes, editor Linux Medical News
