As other commenters have noted, the history of VistA has long been dependent upon brilliant software development from the VA patient care facilities which has enabled the platform to succeed in spite of various misguided enterprise software decisions from the leadership of the VA. The new Cerner lab contract seems to fit right in to this history. We'll have to wait and see if this is a big enough misstep to kill VistA or if, in the end, it is merely an annoyance that the platform will route around.
