Many news sources are reporting the Google PHR Pilot announcement such as the NY Times: '...on Thursday, Google’s technology for personal health records, which is still in development, is getting a big endorsement from the Cleveland Clinic. World Privacy Forum addressed PHR's yesterday-
by John Norris on Friday February 22, 2008 @ 05:15 AM
World Privacy Forum's report "Personal Health Records: Why Many PHRs Threaten Privacy" released yesterday goes into considerable detail as to why PHR's are a privacy nightmare.

They discuss how PHR vendors may not be covered by HIPAA nor patient/provider confidentiality laws (esp subpoenas.)

They particularly note that PHR vendors that also provide email services have a lot of data that can be easily linked together (...and to you.)

I'd really like to see this sort of thing work, but am cautious.

The World Privacy Forum report makes a number of valid statements; but the context is rather ridiculous. It states at the beginning that the report pertains only to PHRs not covered by HIPAA. It then proceeds to make the case that PHRs not covered by HIPAA will not have the same privacy protections as those covered by HIPAA. Genius.
