Misys seeks new Director of Open Source Development -- Healthcare
Health-IT Successes Posted by Fred Trotter on Friday June 13, 2008 @ 05:09 PM
from the Health-IT Successes dept.
Recently, Histalk leaked that Ryan Bloom, has left his role as Director of Open Source Development -- Healthcare. The post contemplates that Blooms departure might indicate that the Misys commitment to open source has waned. I got Tim Elwell's permission to repost his thoughts from an email exchange between, him, me and Tim from Histalk. Elwell writes:

Misys plc has no less commitment for open source today than we did when I was hired back in November 2007. Our CEO and Board of Directors are firmly supportive of our mission and have backed that up by doubling their investment in the open source team this fiscal year (which began June 1). To that end, we are looking for experienced Lead Architects and Junior Architects with solid open source development skills. Our initial concentration is on interoperability solutions so folks with a working understanding of healthcare interoperability including Connecting for Health Common Framework, HL-7, CCHIT, HITSP, HISPC, NHIN, IHE, and HIE initiatives are most desirable.

And yes, Ryan Bloom will be leaving Misys. But I believe Ryan is committed to the projects we have started and I expect him to continue to contribute in some capacity. That's the neat thing about open source; you are no tied to a company but linked to a cause. Ryan taught me that open source developers tend to work on projects that "scratch their own itch". We came together to solve some healthcare problems and are all committed to doing that. So watch for Ryan; I don't think he'll be far from the same projects that Misys will continue to support. Additionally, we are looking at filling Ryan's role which is Director of Open Source Solutions. The role will include a fair amount of travel and customer interaction because unless you understand the problems, you can't solve them. A brief description of the position follows:

To develop and maintain the high-level design and requirements plan for the overall logical and technical IT architecture in support of health information exchange (HIE) and interoperability models for healthcare including the support of accommodating service and support business models. This individual will provide technical leadership, project management and consulting across the organization and has participated and successfully contributed in a recognized open source community. The individual will participate in key strategic decision making down to the project planning level which may include management of key product development activities. The individual will gain organizational and community commitment for all high-level infrastructure plans and initiate and participate in projects to evaluate technologies and methods for implementing these plans within and outside of the open source community.

My hope is to locate the position in NY but I am flexible on the location provided we get the right talent. Digg this article

Re: Misys seeks new Director of Open Source Development -- Healthcare
by Ryan Bloom on Saturday June 21, 2008 @ 08:42 PM

I wanted to respond briefly to the comments posted to LinuxMedNews on June 13th. I was asked to wait until I was no longer a Misys employee to send this e-mail. I have indeed left Misys after a little more that six months. It quickly became apparent that the position of Director of Open Source Development was a misnomer. My job at Misys has been, in fact, a loosely defined Product Management / pre-sales position. As anybody who looks at my background will see, this is not my strength, nor is it my passion. In addition, not having real experience in the healthcare industry has hindered my ability to contribute and define direction for the Misys' open source healthcare strategy.

I do believe that Misys is committed to Open Source, but that commitment, is relatively new. My resigning at this time will hopefully force others within the company to learn more about open source, especially what we mean by the culture of Open Source. I do hope that Misys hires people who understand Open Source, as they will need that knowledge internally. I have spoken with the right people at Misys, and I believe that their plan is to hire Open Source experts on the development team, but I cannot commit to that.

With regard to the comment that I will continue to work on the Open Source projects that Misys has been working on, my plans for now are to monitor a project that has just begun and that I was associated with while in my position at Misys. I will contribute to this project as I have time. This is the only project that I intend to continue with.

I have removed my name from the Braid project already, and I have no plans to be associated with that project. I do not believe that Misys has invested in this project to the degree necessary to make it a successful project.

Since I am going to a start-up the reality is that I am unlikely to have much time to spend writing code for any project not associated with my new position.

I hope this letter makes things more clear for you. In the future, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about what I am working on.

    Ryan

      Ryan,

      Thanks for posting this.

I think it is a tribute to you that your recognized the situation wasn't right for you and you took action.

It is very exciting that Misys is committed to working with the open source healthcare community. I hope you were able to provide the company with some insight into what it takes to be successful in open source.

      Good luck and best wishes.

      Tim

I just wanted to go 'on the record' and thank this Community (and Fred Trotter in particular) for the pointer to a great OS find. Her name is Alesha Adamson and her first day with Misys was Aug. 4. We are still looking for some open source developers (see my previous posts) so if you know of anyone, please pass a pointer along to me at tim.elwell@misys.com. Here's a blurb on Alesha who has GREAT HIE and healthcare credentials along with real healthcare OS experience in implementation. Please welcome Alesha Adamson to my team as director of Open Source Solutions - Healthcare. Alesha will be assisting me on strategy and roadmap development, creating a network to promote the exchange of health information across various communities, and further developing an open source community to support our HIE initiatives. Alesha joins us from the University of Texas Health Science Center, where she served as the chief of health informatics integration. In this role, she focused on governance structures to facilitate the sharing of clinical and research data, and developed approaches for informatics standards. She also created a successful open source health information exchange for the Healthcare Access San Antonio (HASA). Alesha's healthcare and technical background includes serving as director of technology at HASA, informaticist and HIPAA expert with Oregon Health and Sciences University and a 3-year stint in the Oregon Army National Guard. She has published various policy and technical papers on interoperability and open source and is teaching graduate-level technical courses. She has also worked with state and federal governments to accelerate adoption of health information infrastructures. She was recently named by Texas Governor Rick Perry to the Board of Directors for the Texas Health Services Authority. Alesha earned her master's and bachelor's degrees in Computer Science from Portland State University, a NSA Center of Excellence.
