  Potpourri: WalMart, GoogleHealth and Cerner
Interesting Developments Posted by Ignacio Valdes, MD on Saturday June 14, 2008 @ 08:39 AM
from the interesting-developments dept.
From the hardhats blog came this and this discussion of Cerner dissing GoogleHealth partnership as well as that Cerner's model is threatened by open-source. The next article is about Wal-Mart's impact with its retail stores and how it is a boost for eClinicalWorks and a jab for '70's technology'. I say: "Hey Wal-Mart, why don't you use and fund development of ClearHealth/MirrorMed instead?" Digg this article

While your question at the end is rhetorical. I believe there is an answer; of a sort.

It's the not invented here attitude. It is quite pervasive in IT in general and healthcare in particular, in the US. People and organizations seem to tackle the complexity of healthcare information management over and over again in the same ways.

The following quote from George Santayana comes to mind:
'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.'
Life of Reason, Reason in Common Sense, Scribner's, 1905, page 284

Learning from the prior works is one of the greatest benefits of open source/open content. I wonder how good of a job we are doing within the open source communities?
