Re: Length of medical education
by Margaret on Thursday March 04, 2004 @ 09:53 PM
Hello I am a tweleve year old middle school student at Seton Catholic School. I have a dream of becoming a veternarian when I am older so I disided to do my science report in the medical field. I am doing a science report on a science career. I was wondering how many years in all does it take to become a doctor. I was also wondering where some places where this trainig would take place would be, and also what are some of the responsibilities of a docotor are. This report is due pretty soon so if you could get back to me as soon as possibly that would be gratefully appreciated.Thank you so much. Also in this report we have to do a bibliography and if you get back to me in time I will definately put your name in it. Ones again thank you. Margaret

Sure thing Margaret. The minimum amount of training in the US is 4 years of medical school followed by 3 years of residency in a specialty such as Surgery, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Training takes place at 1 of many medical schools located across the country. Here's a great place to start: http://www.imdiversity.com/Article_Detail.asp?Article_ID=8077 Also, the PBS video of the same title 'So you Want To Become a Doctor?' shows you what medical school is like. You may be able to get this at a local library. Hope this helps and good luck. -- IV
