i am a student at high school who wants to major in pre medicine upon graduating. i would like to know how long it will take for a student to complete the entire process of being a doctor. i will like to know how many years upon graduating from college from majoring in pre medicine will a student continue to go to school to eventually become a doctor

    Length of medical education

    You wouldn't necessarily have to have a B.S. degree, alot of people do but some people get into medical school after finishing all of the required classes which would probably take 3 years. Upon admission to medical school your looking at 4 years of medical education, 2 years basic sciences + 2 years of clinical training. Then your residency takes at least 3 more years or more depending on what you want to do. I've heard that there are medical programs which accept students out of high school, but I would say that they are extremely competitive. My advice talk to some career counselors at your school and evaluate what your strengths and weaknesses are and what jobs might interest you, before deciding to go into medicine. Don't get me wrong medicine is really great and interesting, but its alot of hard work and studying and unless you really enjoy what your doing you might find yourself miserable. I would also suggest finding a physician to shadow now so you could talk to them about a career in medicine and find out what it's like to see patients.
