Re: Medical Open Source Boot Camp = Drivel
by Chason Hayes on Saturday October 28, 2000 @ 03:51 AM
As an orthopedic surgeon with over 20 years of programming experience, I feel that I can comfortably straddle the fence of this discussion. It is true that many programmers do not write the program that is requested of them (read any project manager books and see the chapter after chapter written on design specs and how to get there) It is also true that physicians are notoriously difficult to communicate with. One problem being that every single one thinks his way is the "right" way and refuses to adapt or change. Many physicians do not have organized methods of presenting their data in their dictations, so to expect them to organize their thoughts to fit a program is a real challenge. Fortunately there are talented and detail oriented programmers who can extract the data they need, and there are organized physicians who can express their needs well. It is this cmbination of individuals who will accomplish what no other can.
