Agreement on and implementation of standardized EHRs remains a challenge, one that must be solved if the improvements in patient safety and integrated shared care are to occur.

Day one of the ICMCC conference dissects the issues and visions for addressing them. A number of internationally acclaimed speakers will cover various aspects, from regional, global and practical points of view. The speakers of the semi-political morning part will be asked to cover both the state-of-the-art and their particular vision, whereas the afternoon speakers will deal with both state-of-the-art and hurdles and problems. We will also invite a speaker who will try to show why standardization is less of an issue in other fields.

On the second day we will deal with terminology. Terminology seems to be just agreement on words, but in reality it is much more difficult. Standardizing on the English language does not suffice because of cultural and linguistic differences. Medical language is by far the largest professional language in the world. Medicine is the most information intensive business. Yet expenditure in ICT is still extremely low. In the last decades a lot of progress has been made with more formal languages that also can be understood by computers. But if all this is available why dont we use it?. Speakers will address issues like: What do we really need now? Do the products on offer fit those needs? What are the socio economic constraints and impacts? And last but not least the citizen, is he/she better off? Do the professionals keep an appropriate record that can safely be communicated to other care providers nationally as well as in the international setting?

In parallel we will organize a half day workshop on the implementation of EHR standards with an emphasis on OpenEHR.

The day will be concluded with a plenary discussion.
