Open source software, including OpenEMR, is evaluated in the
President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (“PEPFAR”) Software Inventory Report for use with HIV and AIDS. PEPFAR “FY 2005 budget requests $2.8 billion for fighting AIDS globally, which more than triples the investment since 2001.” PEPFAR is a “five-year, $15 billion initiative to turn the tide in the global effort to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic.” Read On for more details.
Care for patients with HIV and AIDS includes anti-retroviral therapy (“ART”) and prevention of mother to child transmission (“PMTCT”). The US Agency for International Development (USAID) completed the PEPFAR Software Inventory Report to assist health care providers in evaluating available software resources. The Software Inventory Report evaluates 13 applications, five of which are open source, for use with HIV and AIDS medical care.
Page 21 of the Software Inventory Report contains a description of OpenEMR for use with ART and PMTCT.
