Blue Cliff, Inc. has announced the development of a non-proprietary open source laboratory interface to VistA-Office Electronic Health record system (VOE). Blue Cliff is a Hawaii-based software consultant and development company specializing in providing installation, configuration and customization support for VistA and its derivatives.
�There was a gap in the system, and we�ve filled it,� said Blue Cliff VistA Specialist Norman Dodd. �This new interface software provides the functionality required for ordering laboratory tests thru VOE and receiving electronic and paper based results from external lab services.� The Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) capabilities of VOE are enhanced to include the range of laboratory workflow scenarios encountered in primary care settings so all orders can be completed entirely within the clinical chart.
Blue Cliff developed the interface for the Centers for Medicare (CMS) VOE beta test project that was completed January 31, 2007. The Iowa Foundation for Medical Care managed the CMS VOE project and solution development in collaboration with WorldVistA, a not-for-profit organization of VistA developers and funded the laboratory interface development effort.
�Blue Cliff has transferred the interface software to WorldVistA for public use,� adds Dodd.
VOE, which is based on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) enterprise-wide VistA� system, now offers non-VA hospitals and healthcare providers a robust affordable healthcare information system free of licensing costs. VistA is available through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and versions of the system are available through vendors like Blue Cliff.
The laboratory interface complements the modular makeup of Blue Cliff�s Vista-EMR program to meet the administrative and clinical documentation needs of smaller medical facilities.
