I’m happy to announce the first Release Candidate version of Medical, the Free Health and Hospital Information System. This version is the result of over 2 years of hard work, and I see it as the starting point for a modern, scalable Free Health and Hospital Information System.

VistA Gets Pediatric Growth Charts
Astronaut and TMG have announced that the Astronaut VistA Installer Suite version 1.0 release candidate 2 contains usable growth charts in the TMG-CPRS reports tab for the first time in VistA history.
Call for participation Med-e-Tel FLOSS-HC track (6-8 April 2011, Luxembourg)
The 2nd FLOSS in health care track at Med-e-Tel 2011 will take place at the 6-8 April 2011 in Luxembourg. Contributions are highly welcome.
After the success of its first edition at Med-e-Tel 2010 (23 speakers, 1 keynote presentation, 1 panel discussion), the Free/Libre Open Source Software in Health Care (FLOSS-HC) track 2011 aims to create the leading European summit bringing together FLOSS-HC developers, service providers and users from all over the world to cross-fertilize Open technological, business and social initiatives to shape the future of open health care systems.
Implementing FreeMED in Guatemala
Through the efforts of the FreeMED Software Foundation, many generous donors and help from the Pop-Wuj Spanish Language School, we were able to install an advanced electronic medical record, somewhat customized, for the a clinic in Quezeltenagno, Guatemala. The clinic, on its way to be self sustaining, serves the poor and under-served in the region with outreach to many of the smaller Pueblos. Triumphs and problems are detailed here but the system is up and running.
FreeDiams v0.5.0 beta available
FreeDiams prescriber and drug-drug interaction checker is the result of FreeMedForms prescriber plugins built into a standalone application. FreeDiams is a free and open source application, GPLv3.
The 0.5.0 version brings drugs interactions calculation on all available drugs databases (US, CA, FR and ZA).
The Open Source Effect: Akaza Research Provides Insight into Rapid Growth of OpenClinica
OpenClinica, the open source clinical trials software has seen a surge in usage over the past year, according to survey data released today by Akaza Research.
“Our recent survey of the OpenClinica community showed strong expansion in all key measurements of system usage,” said Cal Collins, Chief Executive Officer at Akaza. “In the past year we have seen doubling in the number of OpenClinica users and subjects, and a nearly 10-fold increase in regulatory submissions.”

FreeMedForms (FMF) is a multi-platform software (available on MacOS, Linux, FreeBSD, Windows),
multilingual, free and open source, released under the new BSD license.
FreeMedForms is developed by medical doctors and is mainly intended for health professionals.

Medical FLOSS Repository: An update from Medfloss.org
As you might know Medfloss.org (formerly medfoss.apfelkraut.org) tries to provide a comprehensive and structured overview of Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects for the health care domain.
After the initial launch 6 months ago it recently welcomed the 200th project in its repository: the GPL-licensed iDART software – iDART is the abbreviation of “Intelligent Dispensing of Antiretroviral Treatment” and according to its authors addresses many of the challenges faced by public ART dispensing pharmacies in developing countries.
