California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger promised a complete audit of California’s procedures and finances. That audit resulted in the California Performance Review. Information technology was considered in the review, and the California Performance Review recommends that the State of California explore open source alternatives.
Approximately 60 thousand US dollars awarded for open source Care2x. This milestone for Care2x acceptance in Brazil was made by a federal supporting agency called FINEP of the brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT). The financial support was awarded to the Institute for Scientific and Technological Research (IPCT) of a large southern brazilian university PUCRS in partnership with the Alfamais.com group. The university research department is being directed by Professor Dario Azevedo while the Alfamais group is composed of former university professors and e-learning consultants.
Rural Area Medical Volunteer Corp (RAM) uses OpenEMR and registers over 6,000 patients in 2.5 days using a single 1.7 Ghz server accessed by 25 workstations. “At several points during the clniic we were registering a new patient every 15 seconds.” The quotes below were provided to Pennington Firm by volunteers at RAM.
“We used OpenEMR for registration at RAM Expedition #400, held at the Wise County Fairgrounds on July 23-25 and it worked flawlessly. Paper based registration and encounters were used this year, as backup, in case of equipment failure (which didn’t happen).”

OpenEMR, a free, open source practice management, EMR and billing application will soon support direct submission of payments to Medi-Cal and Medicare of California. OpenEMR currently supports two clearinghouses, ProxyMed and ZirMed and is able to submit claims in the HIPAA ANSI X12 format allowing it to support other clearinghouses or direct billing.
We just finished releasing Electrocardiognosis,
a 24h ambulatory ECG monitor with open source schematics, firmware and analysis program, running on Linux+x11, linux+svgalib or MS-DOS.
